Red Tower secures new grant!
The Red Tower Community Hub recognises that our local people need more than food and many are struggling with the cost of energy particularly related to heating. Bill Hill, one of our directors, applied to City of York Council for a grant under the Good Place, Warm Place scheme. The grant of approx. £2500 has just been awarded and a small team will be putting the grant to good use over the next cold months.
The grant is in two parts: the first, to supplement food supplies, especially healthy food items that might not regularly be offered in the supermarket’s surplus that we receive. The second part of the bid is concerned with a range of goods that will help keep local residents warm improving home insulation, providing items of warm clothing and items of equipment such as heaters and microwaves, etc.
The project will be carefully managed and draw on other schemes such as Rachel Maskell’s initiative to collect a range of items to meet some of the above needs. We have already bought and distributed hot water bottles, throws, travel mugs and vacuum flasks to our community members who collect food every week. They report that they are already making a difference.
