We are very fortunate to have support from local supermarkets and the nearest is Waitrose, just across the road. We collect from them every week as well as receiving grants periodically, typically at this time of year. Last year and this, they have gone one step further. They have installed what we call ‘the cage’ to receive donations from the customers following recommendations that we have given for non-perishable goods such as rice, pasta and cereals.
Last year, we trundled across the road with three trolleys full to the gunnels with food. This year, we have collected the contents of more than 4 cages, each more or less filling a car – too much to trundle. Before Christmas, this meant that Mo, our food supremo, was able to give local people up to three bags of food and include extra such as selections boxes and chocolates. As the New Year is upon us, it means that our stocks are high.
Such generosity on the part of the customers and corporate social responsibility on the part of Waitrose means that our weekly collections, which are always less reliable at this time of year, can be more than supplemented and our stock is secure for the coming months.
Everybody should have access to good, nutritious food and Waitrose are certainly lending us a big hand.
A big thank you to them!
